UK Prison System Is Completely Flawed

We knew that the way the prison system worked with KPIs could probably be improved but we didn’t think it would be as bad as it is. The KPIs used by the UK prison system in completely and utterly flawed. KPIs are the most important thing you can use to measure performance and improvements.

To be fair we are using documents from 2003 but I would be suprised if things have changed. Please feel free to get into contact with us if they have changed.

This is a link to the paper that details the KPIs used by the prison system

Annex A at towards the bottom tells you everything you need to know. The paper starts off okay.

It states something so obvious it creates more questions that it answers “a safe decent and healthy environment.” does this really need to be stated? And if so why?

It then says a KPI is to “Reduce re-offending”. Okay, so it seems they have identified the main issue. Now if you look at Annex A there is absolutely no mention targets to address the re-offending rate.

Again the KPIs that are measured create more questions than they answer but I will stick to the main issue as I see it. The re-offending rate. The current rate and what the target is. This is not addressed which is why I believe the UK Prison System is completely flawed.

The only KPI that matters is not mentioned. Until this is addressed the UK can not hope to begin reducing the UK prison population which should be the only goal of the UK prison system. ie achieve a zero inmate level. This may not be possible but it should be the target of the prison system.
