More and more it is being said in the international media that the economic problems in Greece stem from the Greek government not collecting taxes.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Tax avoidance is not a new thing in Greece, it is a cultural phenomenon and it has been part of Greek society for as long as any Greek can remember.
To say tax avoidance in the problem is implying that it is a new thing that the government could not have predicted. The fact is the government knew and knows how much tax it takes in every year and it is a consistent and predictable amount.

The only way tax avoidance could have anything to do with the current economic problems is if it were an unpredictable factor in the budgeting of government spending. It is clearly not, ask any Greek.
The current economic problems are down to the mismanagement and massive errors in long term financial planning of the Greek state.
Tax avoidance has nothing to do with the current economic situation.
Constance Hunter was interviewed on Bloomberg Television on the 27th of May and the non collection of taxes was the only thing she highlighted. Perhaps this was her brief before the interview but either way it does not change the fact the government has and is mismanaging the Greek economy.
