Fedex/UPS Delivery Driver Throwing Boxes Video

CNN did a piece on this this morning and now it’s everywhere even though the You Tube videos they are talking about have been up for months.

Apart with the obvious problems of a delivery driver throwing parcels around you have to ask what KPIs FedEx and UPS are using to turn normal people into people who will quite happily trash customers parcels.

You have to assume that the delivery guys are do not normally treat things in their life as badly as this. You have to assume that these delivery drivers are usually careful, I bet they don’t have many accident in the works van for example.

So something is clearly wrong with the priorities list that UPS and FedEx give their drivers.

Common sense says that they are rewarded the more drops (pun intended) they do and common sense also says that UPS and FedEx have no procedures in place which penalize drivers who deliver damaged parcels.

And that is the crux of the issue. There is no way to prove that the contents of the parcels were fine before the delivery driver took possession so there is no real way for FedEx or UPS to determine how, when and where the parcels were damaged. Short of opening the parcels and checking them before the driver loads up.

So that is the problem that UPS and FedEx face. How do they prove who, when, where and how the parcels were damaged.

In reality they cannot so there needs to be something bigger than KPIs to make drivers take care of the parcels they are delivering.

As with everything it starts a the top. If care of parcels is a top priority, that will filter down through the whole organisation.

But it is a balancing act. You want the drivers to be as fast and as productive as possible, but you also want them to take their time and look after the parcels.

Asking the drivers what the company needs to do to better look after the parcels would be a good start.
