Athens News reports today All refused to make public statements after the meeting, except Karatzaferis, who commented bitterly that “unfortunately, some people’s ‘seat’ is above Greece”.
The actions of the government reinforce this statement. There is absolutely no economist on the planet that would say “to grow an economy you increase the taxes”. Yet that is exactly what the PASOK government is requesting. They want to pass the burden of government deficit onto the people that allow the government to operate.
If a business is run badly, you do not expect the customers to pay for bad management. That is exactly what PASOK is asking for. PASOK is asking it’s customers, the people that give them money to pay for their incompetence, it is clearly backwards and it is good that the other political parties are not sheep are are making a stand. You do not see this sort of thing in the USA anymore!
I think everyone agrees that reducing government spending is the way forward but PASOK also wants to increase taxes on the private sector. This makes no sense.
Increasing taxes on the private sector is a short term measure and smacks of a person or party acting solely in the interest on the lenders and not int he interest of the people they claim to represent.
