Plot To Assassinate Greek Prime Minister – Charges Filed

As is typical in the Greek media, details are sketchy to non-existent.

Will this come to anything? Personally I do not expect any-more details to be forthcoming. You have to wonder what the purpose is though. How something so serious can be publicised with absolutely no supporting evidence being made available raises questions for me….

ATHENS, March 14 (Reuters) – A Greek prosecutor pressed charges of treason and trying to destabilise the country against unknown suspects on Wednesday over an alleged 2008 plot to overthrow the then-conservative prime minister, Costas Karamanlis.

Court officials said the plan was hatched to thwart efforts by Karamanlis efforts to improve energy relations with Russia and included overthrowing and even killing the premier. It was not clear who was behind it.

“An investigative prosecutor will now try to locate the persons who devised and organised the plan,” said a court official who requested anonymity.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) —  A prosecutor opened a criminal case Wednesday in a suspected plot to remove the former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis from power, a court official said.

The official said prosecutor Nikos Ornerakis filed a felony count of conspiracy to destabilize the government against “persons unknown” after a preliminary investigation. The probe was sparked by local media reports in August alleging Russian secret services had uncovered a potential plot to topple or assassinate Karamanlis, who served as prime minister from 2004 to 2009.
