Two sides to every headline

Greek Default – We confront a Greek newspaper.

Athens News likes to use dramatic words when outlining a Greek default. We thought this news coverage of  Greek default could be improved upon so we comment on the article here.

I think it would be a good idea for Athens News to outline exactly what you believe a Greek default would look like so readers can put some meaning to the words “catastrophe” and “chaos”.

In my opinion an analysis of a potential Greek default would outline what would happen, when things would happen, and most importantly, why these things would happen.

If your readership can understand what the view is of Athens News with regards to a potential Greek default, your readers can have an educated opinion about your opinions. This would allow everyone to move the conversation forward, at the moment the Greek media in general seems to be stuck at “chaos”.

To give an example of why the use of words like “catastrophe” and chaos” are inappropriate without giving some background. Imagine a newspaper says a traffic accident was horrific but then fails to detail why the accident occurred, how many people were involved and what was the result with regards to casualties, delays etc.

Without this information you are left to take the word of the person telling you there was an accident. Is it sufficient that you simply expect your readership “to take your word for it”? Especially when you are saying their lives could descend into “chaos” and “catastrophe”

Without an explanation, the  use of words like “chaos” and “catastrophe” come across as scare tactics but with no obvious motive.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

First of all we wonder if our comment will be posted on their website and second we wonder if they will reply and if so what they will say.

We are eagerly waiting!
