Greece Exposed – The Travesty of Greek Government “Reforms”

If there was any doubt of the complete fantasy land that the current Greek government works within, this week brought another example.

One of the measures to help plug an 11 billion gap in financing is being blocked by the socialist partners in the government coalition.

What is this measure?

Samaras wants to lay off all government workers within one year of retirement and put them on gardening leave until their pension is due.

How much will these workers be paid on gardening leave?

Who knows, no figures have been disclosed. Let us assume they will receive half wages as an absolute minimum.

Does Samaras really believe this is going to help the Greek economy?

And let us not forget that this measure would only help Greece for one year.

And yet despite this pitiful attempt at cutting the government, it still cannot be passed.

If the Greek government cannot even reduce the wages of people within a year of retirement what chance is there for real shrinking of government?

I put it to you there is absolutely no chance and if the government cannot layoff workers then the only way for the Greek economy is down.

Fotis Kouvelis, the leader of the Democratic Left party who is part of the coalition is the one resisting this tiny measure. I am at a loss as to where he thinks the money is going to come from to pay these people.

Kouvelis is acting as if the Greek government has money to pay these people even though every 3 months the government is threatening Greek citizens with calamity.

On the one hand the Greek government says disaster is imminent and yet on the other hand they act as if there is no rush to cut costs and they act as if they have money to carry on with their current payroll.

The whole situation is completely ridiculous. The Greek government is making absolutely no sense.

They acknowledge that they are about to default at any moment and yet they are not willing to cut costs in any meaningful way.

If the Greek government does not cut and instead raises taxes above their current unfair levels there is only one way for the Greek economy (assuming the government continues to receive bailouts) and that is complete and utter poverty.

It looks like Provopoulos’s predictions are coming true, Greece will be set back 50 years as the private sector struggles to support the massive public sector.
