Greece – 28th of October “Nai” Day from 2012 – Government Source

A source close to George Papandreou say he will introduce a bill before the end of 2011 to changed to the name of the 28th of October from “Ochi/Ohi/Oxi”  Day to “Nai” Day, with the change to take effect in 2012

The thinking behind the proposed change of title is down to the fact that the Greek Prime Minister apparently believes such a belligerent attitude as shown by Metaxas has no place in a united Europe and is something that should be forgotten, especially given the Greek government’s current financial position.

“Until now, we knew that Greeks were fighting like heroes; from now on we shall say that the heroes fight like Greeks.”

– Winston Churchhill, Prime Minister of Britain – 1940.

The change of the 28th of October to “Nai” is designed to show that Greece is a team player in European matters and is willing to make sacrifices in order to be a respected member of the European community.

The source continued that such a name change would show Greece’s debtors that the country is serious about fixing its financial problems and it shows that Greeks are prepared to sacrifice their tradition of resistance to oppression by foreign entities in the name of European harmony in the 21st century.

and Some more quotes about the Greeks of the time:

– If there had not been the virtue and courage of the Greeks, we do not know which the outcome of World War II would had been.

Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

– The Russian people will always be grateful to the Greeks for delaying the German army long enough for winter to set in, thereby giving us the precious time we needed to prepare. We will never forget

Joseph Stalin, in an open letter read frequently on Radio Moscow during the war

– How can any educated person stay away from the Greeks? I have always been far more interested in them than in science.

Albert Einstein, Jewish-American scientist

– Of all peoples the Greeks have dreamt the dream of life best.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German polymath

The government source is quoted as saying “such blatantly rude and obstructive statements (reffering to Metaxas’s reply to Mussolini) have no place in modern Europe and such celebrations of resistance condone any Greek resistance to the austerity measures which is obviously counterproductive”

President Sarkozy of France was asked if he was aware of the proposed changes to the name given to the 28th of October and if so what was his opinion. His reply was “Such a change shows how seriously Mr Papandreou is with regards fixing his countries finances and it is a move which countries throughout Europe should look to as example”.
