Welsh People and the Stockholm Syndrome

Can it be viewed that the Welsh people believe that the people who control the economy and their laws in Wales are acting in their best interest?

Wikipedia’s page on the Stockholm Syndrome has some interesting points

“the victims, who essentially mistake a lack of abuse from their captors as an act of kindness.”

.. disagreement as to what factors characterize incidents that contribute to the development of Stockholm syndrome. Research has suggested that hostages may exhibit the condition in situations that feature captors who do not abuse the victim, a long duration before resolution, continued contact between the perpetrator and hostage, and a high level of emotion. In fact, experts have concluded that the intensity, not the length of the incident, combined with a lack of physical abuse more likely will create favorable conditions for the development of Stockholm syndrome.

You could say the English have not got the Welsh in captivity, well not in the literal sense. It depends on how you define freedom and independence when referring to a country

Independence is a condition of a nation, country, or state in which its residents and population, or some portion thereof, exercise self-government, and usually sovereignty, over its territory.

I don’t think anyone would dispute that Wales is not independent and that Wales does not have control over it’s own policies with regards to anything.

The Government of Wales Act 2006 gives the Secretary of State for Wales and the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom the right to prohibit the submission of a bill for royal assent if the provisions of the bill are deemed to be outside the legislative competency of the assembly

While it was a victory that the Welsh voted “Yes” for the devolution referendum the potency of the legislation was watered down massively with the phrase The Assembly cannot make laws on subject areas such as defence, tax or welfare benefits, whatever the result of this vote. which are 1 the most important areas and 2 the most expensive areas.

Until Wales has control over taxation it will never be independent.

Ironically there is a political party which wants to see an independent Wales, unfortunately it is socialist.

Be that as it may, it shouldn’t put people off voting for them. I believe we should get independence and then worry about the political system when we get there. At the end of the day an independent Wales will provide an abundance of political parties who want to make their mark in Welsh history, a party will emerge to fulfill the needs of the less socialist and more capitalist thinking people. Plaid Cymru will not be the only political in a free Wales!

Vote Plaid Cymru or any party that supports Welsh independence. Let’s cross the bridge of political philosophy when we get there!

So coming back to the heading of this article, are the Welsh people experiencing a type of Stockholm Syndrome? Polls by English institutions say only 20% of Welsh people want full independence, so you would have to say yes, but the vote of the devolution referendum show that 63% of the population would potentially support it.

But the fact remains until Wales has the power to set taxes, raise taxes and most importantly of all reduce taxes, Wales will never realise her full potential as a nation.

Until Wales has the power to lower taxes and regulations for it’s people, the Welsh people are not going to be in a position where their full potential can be set free.

The fight goes on, progress is being made but we should not loose site of the finish line, like I said above, vote for the political party that has the same finish line, let’s argue about how we are going to celebrate when we get there!
