Greek Media Wants Greeks To Be Dependent On Charity

Athens News ran an editorial today saying how important it was for the Greek government to reform, not so the country could become self-sufficient but so Europe would be more willing to give Greece charity payments.

I would say unbelievable but it’s not. The type of thinking is entirely consistent with the socialist mentality in the Greek media.

And the cherry on the cake is that this article is about 12 billion Euros in “structural funding”. Which in the grand scheme of things is peanuts.

The Greek trade deficit is over 12 billion Euros a year. In other words Greece sends 12 billion Euros to foreigners every year in exchange for things like food, gas, tvs, cars and so on.

Greece does not need to reform to get this 12 billion Euro, that is like pouring 12 billion Euro down the drain.

The Greek government should be concentrating on how it can build up exports so instead of constantly sending huge sums of money abroad and reducing the amount of money in Greece.

The Greek government needs to identify why foreign companies do not want to set up in Greece, why export based companies do not want to set up in Greece to access the EU market, why businesses in Greece do not export more and why Greece is not producing more of the goods it needs.

Until these questions are addressed Greece will always be dependent on the charity of strangers.

The article also goes on about carrots

Greece has indeed been caned in the last months with the dreaded stick of austerity, but it is getting a carrot – a small one, but a carrot nonetheless.

Like this promise of 12 billion Euros is a little incentive.

Why on earth does Athens News consider this a carrot? Surely the Greek government has a huge chocolate cake incentive to stop spending so much money. The chocolate cake being in the form of NOT defaulting.

Sure 12 billion Euros is helpful but which is the better incentive? The carrot or chocolate cake?
