I predicted a close game but ultimately a 49ers win.
Key to the prediction was the 49ers running game.
In the air, the Giants are superior but the running game from the 49ers is on a different level to the Giants. This was key to my prediction of a 49ers win.
So what went wrong?
The 49ers completely abandoned their running game and tried to compete with the Giants in the air. Given this was Harbaugh’s strategy, it is a testament to his coaching that the game was so close.
If someone were to have told me before the game that the 49ers were going to try to air it out, I would have predicted an easy Giants win.
Okay, the weather was terrible, everyone was saying before the game that this eliminated the running game. I thought Harbaugh would go against accepted knowledge. He did not.
Okay it was wet, it was slippery under foot but you have t o look at how effective the 49ers passing game was.
In my opinion it was not effective at all. Especially going into the 4th quarter and over time. What did the 49ers have to loose by trying to go with more running plays? In my opinion, nothing.
It was as if Harbaugh lost perspective on what was happening on the field.
The Giants and 49ers defended each other to a stand still in the 4th quarter. Harbaugh had nothing to lose by tryiong more running plays, especially given its effectiveness through the season.
I believe this is why the 49ers lost this game, they lost perspective and got sucked into a passing game. Something they were never going to beat the Giants with.
